Introduction: Given the antioxidant effects of cumin and the positive effects of exercise on metabolic syndrome and liver enzymes, the present study was conducted to investigate the benefits of 8 weeks of yoga exercises and cumin extract on metabolic syndrome indicators and liver enzymes in elderly women with metabolic syndrome.
Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 32 elderly women with metabolic syndrome with an average age of 60-85 years and a body mass index of 25 to 35 (kg/m2) were randomly selected into four groups of 8 people: yoga combined with cumin consumption, yoga , cumin and control were divided. The interventions were in the form of 8 weeks of yoga training protocol (3 sessions per week for 1 hour) and the consumption of cumin extract capsules of Barij 25 mg every 12 hours. Data were evaluated using the statistical method of analysis of covariance and Bonferroni post hoc test using SPSS23 software.
Results: The results of the analysis of covariance indicated a significant difference in the values of lipid profile and liver enzymes in the three experimental groups compared to the control group (P>0.05). Yoga practice alone had no significant effect on blood glucose, three-month sugar, and insulin resistance. Also, supplementation Cumin extract alone had no significant effect on systolic and diastolic pressure.
Discussion: Yoga exercises with cumin extract for 8 weeks can be effective on metabolic syndrome and liver enzymes. Therefore, it is recommended for elderly women with metabolic syndrome to do yoga exercises and consume cumin extract.
